Jason’s father Barry, a customer of Lexus Edgware Road, now runs the charity on behalf of his son who at the age of 33 was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Rare in someone so young, Jason received a series of treatments at The Royal Marsden Hospital and the tumour, initially thought inoperable, was successfully removed. However, the cancer returned to his liver and sadly he died in November last year.
During his two-year battle Jason found that having cancer was a very lonely place. He was scared, anxious and his normal life had come to a halt. He was suffering the terrible side effects of a very aggressive chemotherapy treatment and found it very difficult to discuss his fears or pain with his family and friends. It became apparent that there was nowhere Jason could seek support from fellow sufferers of a similar age – 20-45-years-old. To keep friends and family abreast with the state of his health and his plight, he started a blog which immediately attracted over 1500 different viewers and went on to reach over 3000 including fellow sufferers from all over the world. From this he raised over £35,000 for the Royal Marsden which subsequently became the “No Surrender Charitable Trust”. During the last year of his life, assisted by his close friends and family, Jason raised nearly £200,000.
Jason’s website www.no-surrender.org lives on providing a social network site for young adult cancer sufferers to come to, log-on and meet fellow sufferers. To date there are over 320 members, many of whom are actively involved with each other, forging friendships and participating in forums, forming groups and posting events, photos and videos.
The Trust has recently agreed with University College Hospital to fund the “Jason Boas Research Fellowship into Cancer and Pancreatic Cancer”. This will obviously be a big commitment but very necessary in the fight against cancer and we hope that our endeavours will be positive and somehow we will be able to contribute significantly so that Jason’s short but purposeful life will be remembered forever.
