It is a legal requirement for car tyres to have at least 1.6mm of tread in a continuous band around the central three-quarters of the tread’s width. Driving with illegal tyres could incur a fine of up to £2,500 plus three penalty points per tyre. According to industry tests, tyre performance at 3mm depth is significantly improved and could avoid serious accidents.
